Criss Cheatham is an inspiration. He's all about focus and the business of rock n roll.Interviewing him must be like interviewing David Lee Roth.....just hold out the microphone and let him go.Here is the skinny; when Criss places all original sets he plays it as "August Christopher", when he plays exclusive cover sets, it's played as "CC3" .In addition he plays drums for Curb records act "Bomshell" whose debut album drops in the spring of '06.
I work alot with TMR Productions (home studio of Todd Mark Rubenstein). He's a positive guy and a versatile musician, producer, engineer, entrepreneur type.He has good things to say about people that do business at his studio but also vents about "clients" that don't understand how the dots are connected (remember the Howard Stern episode where the chick has "written" the song for Howard......ugh..."GIve Me More, Howard Stern" ....that was TMR).One day I walked in for a session and Todd was stoked about this band "August Christopher".He just went on and on about them.Todd's a rock dog and doesn't get to do as much rock n roll as he'd like to (like many other studio owners here in our fair city), so when he comes across something that hits close to home, he's on it like a dog on leg.
Skip forward about 6 months and August Christopher is getting fairly regular rotation at The Courtyard Cafe in Antioch.Since I could never decipher the byline/description the local press gave them, I never cared to go to a show, so I havent actually seen them. However, you can't ignore the impressive amount of activity on their website. Here's a Nashville band that works. If they can't find the work nearby, they go where the work IS.You can sit in your bedrooms and craft the perfect Opus Maximus but it won't have a live life unless you get out and work it.RuPaul (who I went to school with) said it best;"you better WORK".....
