TWO things:
~at this point I'm fans of only two people; Prince, and VAST (and occasionally Todzilla when he's having a good night).
~I've never asked for my money back at a show before until tonight.

VAST is an acronym that stands for Visual Audio Sensory Theater. It's centered around Jon Crosby.I think of VAST as the organic man's Nine Inch Nails.Their first two albums were with Elektra Records moving on to Carson Daly's label,456, thereafter.

I don't go to alot of in town shows because I play so much, so when I go I wanna be wowed.I was really pumped to see this show though I missed Cross Culture, the opening act, because I was watching Good Fellas.I got there right as VAST was sound checking. The house lights dimmed to start the show but had almost no affect. It seems that the combination of lights from the bar and Cross Culture's huge merchandise station kept it lit nicely thank you very much. The obligatory intro tape started and the players took their places.FIRST SONG : They started out with something new from the realvast.com site.I noticed two things right off; Jon had a different band and he had princess Lea on drums (seriously....dude, get some in-ear monitors).I don't mind backing tracks and I don't mind headphones if I'm watching an instructional video, but headphones don't rock.Next Jon came out bloated and bearded actually playing electric guitar (instead of the acoustic he usually dons). The band sounded good even though the engineer was still tweaking. It is my opinion that they could have been considerably louder.I wasn't farmiliar with the song and wasn't impressed.I was also bored....not much going on visually. If they're not gonna bring it with everything they got then I'm not gonna stand up for the next hour and a half so I started looking for a place to sit (I got the doorman's stool). The SECOND SONG , "Here",was off the first album.......then it hit me.Jon sounded horrible. His voice was swimming in a plethora washy effects, but not only did he sound conjested but had almost zero vocal range and was not singing in pitch. It was obvious that there was a problem.I assumed he had the flu or some health related illness that affected his voice ( acid reflux anyone?? j/k).

I LEFT out the front door.I couldn't take it.Right about the same time two chicks also left out of the other front door and as we merged together on the sidewalk I asked "what do you think is wrong with him?"...without missing a beat the one chick goes "I think he has the flu".Apparently they couldn't take it either.I feel bad for the percentage of people who were there that have never heard VAST live because it is an amazing show and Jon Crosby easliy makes converts out of virgin ears.If I wasn't a fan I wouldn't be critical.I feel like I have a right to be since I might only have the oportunity to go to one more show (at the most) before the end of the year and because I have spent hard earned money on VAST stuff.Would it had been better to just cancel the show instead of suck? That's a question worthy of another article that perhaps another staffer could tackle.
The concert is still going as I write this "review".Perhaps Jon Crosby has given a heartfelt explanation to whoever opted to stay (not sure what the "showbiz rule" is on public excuses).I don't really care.If someone else got rocked tonight, good for them.I did not.
Jon I hope you get better. If you need a guitar player I might be available in the spring of 07.
