Deadsun- a star that has burned through it's own fuel or energy to the point in which it becomes a dwarf star.

If you look only at the definition alone, then Deadsun is the wrong name for this band.  Live or on a disc, they've got a lot of energy to go 'round.  Along with that is a good lyric base.  Although the lyrics are a bit negative, it is done in a thoughtful way.  The CD covers issues from sexual addiction to facing your fears not being that bad (ok so the latter isn't that negative).

I must admit, I'm a follower not a leader.  Music over the last few years has gone the way-side for me.  I got sucked into the pop scene more than ever before.  Shakira...mmmmmm, Shakiiirrrraaaaaaa, Vanessa Carlton, Fallout Boy, etc.  Deadsun is one of those bands that makes me want to get behind my drums and play again.  Not just their sound but the level of intensity that is put into each song is nothing but energizing.  I've even gotten back into some older bands that I dropped due to my lack of interest.  Chino and Maynard would be proud if they could see me now!

"Purify" is the first song on the CD and very well says what most of us think.  'If you don't believe in me now, you never will.'  That pretty much sets the tone for the rest of the CD.  "If Only" analyzes the fact that everything would be fine if only everyone would change.  Boy have I been there before!  Speaking of which, "Sexualized (Can't say No)" is about sexual addiction.  More people are afflicted from this than you would ever think.  (Sidenote – Nashville is the sex addiction recovery capital of the world…in case any of you need help!).  I was slightly confused by "The Fall".  I couldn't figure out if it's about the audience or about Industry people.  The latter seems more appropriate but I'm keeping an open mind either way.   "Face It" is my pick for the best song on this CD.  It's about facing your fears.  I just read a book about people that let victimization run there lives.  If I had only listened to this first…

This CD is very well produced.  From what I was told, it was mostly Rex working on his computer, studio time with the individual band members and something about a mattress being stood up on it's end.  This has to be the best production quality on a CD from a local band.  Usually, I'd blame ProTools for being the reason bands sounds so good on disc, however, I've seen them live.  Deasun is not a 'studio project' like other well produced rock bands.  This is what my bud Snoop Dog calls the 'Real Deal Holyfield'.

Be sure to pay attention to Todd's vocals.  Some bands out there today scream too much.  Apparently, if you scream a lot, you'll be put on the air.  Listen to Disturbed type bands and you'll hear what I mean.  Todd knows precisely when to add a scream or a growl.  It accentuates the frustration or anger he's trying to get across.  There's almost nothing worse than a band that bases the whole act on screaming.  Except if it's based on the 'artist' being naked....mmmmm......Shhaaakkkkkiiiirrrraaaaaa.....

If you are reading this, then you must like local artists.  Support this band!  Go see them, get the CD, a shirt, whatever.  The fact that this band isn't signed blows me away.  They're too good to be unsigned.

This CD gets 5 out of 5 stars.

And, as always, this review is MY opinion, not necessarily those of NashvilleRock.net staffers.  But if they DO disagree, then they suck!
