fORMER Studio Diary
Entry 1: February 22, 2007, The day before the first day.
I guess this will be our introduction to Recording 101 with fORMER. For those of you who aren't familiar with us, we're a rock band from right here in occasionally-sunny Nashville, TN, comprised of ex(former)-members of Bombshell Crush, Del Giovanni Clique, and Mink. The cast of characters for this little endeavor will include myself; Denny Smith, I contribute vocals, guitars, and some keys, as well as occasionally-witty(and often not) observations on the process at hand. I'll be producing this thing with our partner-in-crime, Mr. Michael Saint Leon, a gentlemen of French descent who is always good for laughs, seldom eats(but has been spotted consuming a Pepsi and;just once, an apple), never tires, and who is possessed of an inhuman amount of patience, which will surely be tested over the course of this project. Henry Go will be providing the bass and the bulk of the background vocals, making sure I sing relatively in key, and laughing at me in the booth when I don't to keep my already fragile ego teetering on that edge. Ian Wolczyk will surely share in that experience, when he's not busy doing his guitar tracks, wrangling odd sounds out of his NASA-approved pedalboard, informing us of EXACTLY what he's going to be doing in the next ten minutes to two years, and eating a 50 cent bag of Frito-Lays peanuts. Corey Boise is our drummer, and thus will be playing drums, singing a bit, threatening me with excessive vulgarity, probably changing his hair color at some point, and attempting to rupture all of our eardrums with his favorite toy....a "popcorn" snare. Our auxiliary crew will include, of course, Da Bossman Chris Hurt, who will likely appear from time to time to check our progress and throw his two cents in on the mix, and Miki Ernst, who will be on hand to document the occasion via camcorder so future generations can dissect the mad genius that is Michael Saint Leon at work.
We'll be doing these sessions at The Switchyard in Antioch, Michael's studio, where we've done all of our studio work thus far. The new Ligion record was done there, as was Bombshell Crush , The Everafters CD, some Embers Fade stuff, and a slew of other business. These tracks are for a couple of producers we've been talking to about doing a record and/or shopping the stuff to labels for us and we're doing this on our own dime, so we're gonna keep it brief and inexpensive, 2 or 3 days tops, to cut 3-5 songs and get them mixed. Right now, we've gotta get our asses to Clarksville for a show @ The Warehouse with P. Jones, Caprice, and Deadsun, and then we're in Friday & Saturday from 10AM 'til whenever we get things wrapped, with some small blocks throughout the week to tie up any loose ends, if necessary. Because I know that the anticipation will be more than you all can stand, I'll try to do a wrap-up of Friday before we go in on Saturday, depending on our progress and just how tired I am. If nothing else, I'll be sure to send some photos of Corey with that sweet-ass headband that he wears when he records.
Cheers,
Denny
